What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease that really wreaks havoc on your optic nerve. Most of the time it occurs when fluid just builds up in the front part of the eye & the resulting pressure does the damage – eventually leading to complete blindness.
There are basically two main kinds of glaucoma : open-angle & angle-closure.
Open-angle glaucoma – or wide-angle glaucoma for short – is the most common form. Here’s the thing : your drainage system looks normal, but somehow the fluid just can’t seem to clear out the way it’s supposed to.
Angle-closure glaucoma, on the other hand, is more commonly found in Asia than it is in the West . It also gets called chronic angle-closure or narrow-angle glaucoma from time to time . This type is marked by the space where fluid drains between the cornea and iris getting smaller and smaller, which can lead to a sudden jolt in pressure inside the eye. And to make matters worse, it’s also been linked to farsightedness and cataracts.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
Glaucoma typically goes undetected in it’s early stages because that’s a pretty straightforward fact , which is why getting an eye check up every year is super important.

Who is at risk for developing glaucoma?
Anyone – no matter who you are – can end up with glaucoma, but most of the time it starts to show up in adults who are 40 years old or older.
Other factors that can put you at risk include:
Diabetes – which is a pretty big one
Eye trauma – the kind that comes from an injury to the eye
Long term use of certain meds like prednisone
Having glaucoma in your family already
How is glaucoma diagnosed and treated?
During an eye exam, your eye care provider will take a close look at your eye pressure , and also make sure to get a good look at the back of your eye including the optic nerve. They’ll probably also have you go through some tests like a visual field exam to see how well your peripheral vision is doing.
If you get diagnosed with glaucoma, the treatment plan will depend on just how bad it is. We find that most people are able to get by just fine with eye drops, laser surgery, or microsurgery. We always try to use the method that’s least invasive possible , but in the worst cases we may need to get surgical ASAP to clear out any fluid blockages.
