Dry eye looks different for everyone because the underlying causes vary from person to person.

Common symptoms include:

• Redness or irritation, sometimes with a bloodshot appearance
• A constant burning or stinging sensation
• Itching, or the feeling that something is stuck in your eye
• Light sensitivity, or discomfort in brightly lit spaces
• Excessive tearing, or eyes that feel dry and watery at the same time

Dry eye can come from just about anything

Sometimes the cause is pretty obvious – for example if youve been outside a lot in bad weather or if your eyes are just mildly inflamed.

But a lot of the time, the cause isnt so obvious and can be:

• Disease in your meibomian glands (whatever those are!)
• Blepharitis (ask your eye doc to explain that one to you)
• Allergies ( your eyes just get a little extra sensitive, y’know?)
• Something wrong with the shape of your eyelid or eye
• Certain medications that just happen to have dry eye as a side effect
• Abnormal eye pressure (thats a whole other can of worms)
• Or maybe you just dont have enough of that good eye goo (aqueous fluids, for short)

Because everyone is different and the causes are different, so is the treatment

• Blinking exercises and proper eyelid hygiene
• Low-dose antibiotics for persistent infection
