Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that can really do some damage to your eyes – its the leading cause of vision loss in people with diabetes.
It starts when high blood sugar levels start to cause damage to the blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina) – this causes all sorts of problems like bleeding and swelling, and makes abnormal blood vessels grow in all the wrong places. The longer youve had diabetes and the worse your blood sugar levels are, the more likely you are to end up with this eye problem.
Even though it is an eye condition, diabetic retinopathy often starts off with very few, or even no symptoms at all – it can be pretty sneaky, and you might just put it down to other problems. But if you dont do anything about it, its a recipe for blindness.
