What are my options?
There are many contact lens options available. Your eye care provider will take your lifestyle and vision correction needs into consideration when helping you select the right lenses for your eyes.
Here are some of the most common contact lens types:
-
Hard contact lenses –
Hard contact lenses are pretty much rigid gas permeable lenses. This means that they are pretty porous, allowing oxygen to seep in to the cornea. That's what keeps them in shape on your eye. Because of this, they're sometimes recommended to slow the progression of nearsightedness in kids.
- Soft contact lenses – Soft contact lenses are so comfortable that they've become super popular among wearers. They don't have that "pop out" issue that can sometimes happen with harder lenses. Plus they're great for correcting near, far sightedness, and even astigmatism.
- Disposable soft contact lenses – Disposable lenses are great for short-term wear, especially for people with sensitive eyes who might be prone to allergic reactions or infections. They're also a good choice for kids who might not be the best at taking care of their lenses.
- Extended wear contact lenses – Extended wear contact lenses are specially designed lenses that can be worn continuously for several days or even up to a week without removal, depending on the type and your eye care provider’s guidance. They are typically made from highly oxygen-permeable materials, such as silicone hydrogel, which allow more oxygen to reach the cornea and help maintain eye health during prolonged wear. These lenses offer convenience for people with busy lifestyles or those who prefer not to handle lenses daily.
- Daily wear contact lenses – The majority of contact lenses are daily wear. You wear them all day and take them out at night to clean them. And once they hit their expiration date, they've got to be tossed out because the material starts breaking down.
- Colored contact lenses – These are for people looking to spice up or completely change the color of their iris. And yes, they still need to be treated like regular contact lenses - with care. Not all contact lens companies offer the colored option, although many do.
Speciality Contact Lenses:
- Scleral – A unique, very comfortable, hard lens designed specifically for those with very dry eyes or unique corneal structures like those with Keratoconus or very high prescriptions and astigmatism.
